About the Place
Nestled on Hillside Avenue in Jamaica, NY, El Comal Pupuseria is a humble yet vibrant spot that truly captures the essence of Salvadoran cuisine. From the moment you step inside, you sense that this is a place where tradition meets genuine care. The atmosphere might be modest and unpretentious, but the food offers a rich and authentic experience that speaks volumes about the culture it represents.
The pupusas here are a standout. Crispy on the outside and perfectly filled with a blend of cheese and loroco, they come served with a tangy curtido and flavorful tomato sauce that elevate every bite. Regulars praise the consistency and freshness of these pupusas—especially the revuelta variety—which never fail to satisfy. The care in preparation is obvious and deeply appreciated.
But El Comal’s offerings extend beyond pupusas. Dishes like tamale de elote and casamiento showcase the culinary breadth of Salvadoran comfort food, while unique specialties like the Cangrejofongo—a delightful mash of fried green plantains with freshly prepared crab meat—highlight the kitchen’s creativity and dedication to authentic flavors. This dish, in particular, stands out as a rare find in Queens, cherished by those who seek something truly special.
The drink selection complements the meals perfectly with traditional horchata and tamarindo beverages that refresh the palate and complete the dining experience. Beyond taste, the service is noted for its friendliness and efficiency, making every visit welcoming. Though some have noted minor critiques like automatic gratuity or small oversights in bones found in dishes, these points don’t overshadow the quality and heartfelt cooking that fills this cozy eatery.
El Comal Pupuseria excels at presenting honest, flavorful Salvadoran fare at great value. It’s a place where simplicity and dedication turn humble ingredients into memorable meals. For anyone hungry for authentic pupusas and soulful dishes prepared with care, El Comal Pupuseria remains a treasured destination in Queens.
“ Just a small hole in the wall spot on Hillside but it serves fresh, delicious and authentic food from El Salvador. Service is friendly and efficient and they keep the place clean. It's not fancy but they take care of you and it's a tasty comfortable spot. ”
“ Some the best pupusas in queens....tamale de elote....horchata..Tamarindo drinks....casamiento and steak ..are just some of my favorites.... ”
“ Pupusas were very good crispy and tasty and the service was very nice just don’t like the fact they automatically charge tip when I’m was gonna give one anyway kinda turns me off but overall a nice little spot ”
“ I have had a CANGREJOFONGO. It is mashed fried green plantain with crab meat. It tasted very well. No other place nearby makes this. It is prepared from scratch. It may take a while. The taste is worth the wait. I have had 3 pupusas with cheese and loroco. The tomatoe sauce has a great taste. The curtido also tastes good. I have also had a beef soup. This is so well cooked. The meat fell off the bone. They offered green hot sauce but it was not needed. I will continue coming here. They also do deliveries. ”
“ Good food and better prices. Service has been good too. The atmosphere is a bit old and sometimes the air is musty… But food has always been the same “steady” which is good. Excellent lunch specials. Traditional and simple. ”
